The Curse of Ultraman!

Howdy folks! It's finally time to wrap up the painting on the second Ultraman statue! This time, we're gonna begin with the water on the legs. I did a base coat using some oceany greens that I whipped up.

Here's his cute butt that all the ladies love.
After I had the base color applied, I decided that I need to incorporate some blues in to the water. And I needed BIG BOLD BRUSHSTROKES!

My palette of greens and blues
It was a little difficult getting into his inner thighs with the wavy lines, but when It was all done, it looked like...THIS!

Now for the part I've been dreading: the tentacles. It got a little confusing in a couple of places figuring out which way the tentacles were turning, and I got tired of scooching around on the floor and spinning the statue around too.

I had planned on adding the little suckers all over, but decided against it for two reasons: I liked the lines of the tentacles without them, and I was getting awfully damn tired of sitting on the floor and painting tentacles! Here's how they turned out...

Next it was on to my little salty dog and the finishing up the pirate flag.

At this point I also added a few highlights to the tops of the waves, little knots tying the flag to the mast, and, of course, his eyebrows, and called him done.

Now that everything else was finished, it was time to finally finish up the whole thing by painting the black birds. I have a bit of an unsteady hand, especially when painting upright instead of on a flat surface, so applying the black around the eyes smoothly and as circular as possible was my main concern.

Now just to fill them in with black, add a few highlights on the feathers and we'll call him done!

So, other than fixing some highlights on the pup's nose that I wasn't pleased with and adding a few lighter highlights on the feathers he was all finished! So here's the final piece in all its splendor.

Well, that's it for this one kiddies! Hope you all like it and that you're all doing great! Take care for now!

Ghost of Ultraman!

Howdy folks! It's time to start painting our new Ultraman statue! To begin, I paint the beaks and eyes of the birds and the big sunshine face in a yellow base color. The reason why I did this part first is because yellow paint does NOT wanna cover any other color without applying somewhere around a hundred coats. This way I can overlap the outlines with my yellows, then come back in with my sky color and paint over the yellow that is outside of the outlines.

Next, I add yellow-orange shadows and a slightly lighter yellow highlight to the beaks and eyes and also rough in the irises. Using the same colors I flesh out the sun and the flames around it using more reds and oranges.

Now it's time to cut in around all of that yellow with the sky. I'll save the birds until I get near the end of the job. As you guys familiar with my work know, I paint in a very cartoony style with lots of visible brushstrokes and bright colors, and this piece is no exception!

And here's the sky all painted!

Next we move onto the clouds. I used white, light grays, and purples. The tentacles on the legs are gonna be purple, so I wanted a little purple somewhere else on the piece.

Now a few more white highlights on the clouds...

Up next is the pie tin! And since I had the grays all mixed, I figured I may as well paint the skull and bones on the little pirate flag.

Now it's time for the pie...

Looks yummy, right?
Now using the same brown palette, let's whip out that dingy, what do you say? No, not that one, get your mind outta the gutter.

And finally the mast and the rudder!

That's all for this round! Next time we'll get started on the water and the tentacles and see how far we can get with the rest of it! Hope you're all doing well!

Yep, Another Ultraman!

Hiya folks! I know, I know, I gotta update more often, but in the months since my last Ultraman post I've been a little busy with other stuff that I couldn't share at the time, or just too lazy to make a new blog post, so just learn to live with it, alright? Alright.

So anyways, I got me a new Ultraman statue from my pal, Buddy to paint up! I'll leave out the prep stuff since I already covered that in the first blog entry, and it was exceptionally scintillating even then, I'm sure. I wanted to do something with a little more color this time, and even thought about doing a similar concept to the last one, filing the space with random unrelated images, but that's kind of a chore trying to think of weird drawings to put all over anything. Then the other night I had the kernel or an idea: I had sketched a little wooden boat and thought I'd make it the central image and build from that. I was still planning on just drawing random images all over, but larger characters so I wouldn't have to think of as many different ones.

Once I had the boat on the belly, I thought, why not put an old sea dog at the rudder? Everything started to fall into place after that, make the ocean up to the waist, sky above, sunshine on the statue's face, etc. I started out drawing a whole bunch of different birds in the sky, but then I remembered a little blackbird I had made a few sketches of a year or so ago and never did anything with, I thought I'd use him!

I was making the placement of the birds semi-symmetrical and then thought, why not make 24, like in the old nursery rhyme, so 24 it is! And if we're gonna reference the old nursery rhyme, why not a pie to go with it?

For the legs I had thought about making 24 fish that were reminiscent of the bird shape and doing a similar symmetrical style with them, but trashed that and decided to go with tentacles reaching up from the depths!

Finally, I added a couple of weird squid-like eyes on the toes, so other than a few minor additions and some refinements here and there, we're set to paint! But that will have to wait for the next entry. I hope you're all doing well!
